The Oratorio Chorale celebrates the
80th birthday of the great American composer, Dominick Argento, by
performing his engaging and passionate setting for chorus and piano
concertante of Wallace Stevens' Peter Quince at the Clavier.
Argento shares the program with two other luminaries of the music
world as the Chorale presents J.S. Bach's richly varied and dramatic
Jesu Meine Freude and Tchaikovsky's melodious secular songs
rejoicing in the beauties of nature.

Dark,
expansive, tender, Anton Bruckner's Mass in E minor stands as
a major work by a major composer that is rarely presented to
audiences today. With orchestra accompanying eight-part
chorus, this is choral music performed on a symphonic scale,
demonstrating both wind power and contrapuntal splendor. As
organist for St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, the 17th-century
composer Gabrieli discovered the special antiphonal effects
obtainable in the structure and composed his motets, such as In
Ecclesiis, utilizing those effects with brass and voice.

Another
birthday! The year 2008 marks the 150th anniversary of the
birth of Giacomo Puccini--a perfect opportunity to present Puccini's
joyous and utterly engaging Messa di Gloria, composed when he
was only 22 years old. Beethoven's Mass in C, a lyrical
and uplifting gem, rounds out a program imbued with the spirit of
joy. Gloria!
